L’INTERNATIONAL (Paris) – 15th March 2013

March 19, 2013

Yoyoyo Acapulco, Fiodor Dream Dog:

Ah.  It’s been a while, and I don’t know how long it will be.  The International crowd began getting to me the moment I set foot within its doors, as did its management.  The upstairs bar must have definitively been above capacity, but instead of allowing people down into the bandroom to ease the tension a few minutes earlier than planned, presumably during the sound check, they left us to suffer needlessly …. ‘us’ – I think most Internationalists enjoy needless suffering.

Fiodor Dream Dog.  I was intrigued by his (note: subsequent to the concert I perused the website of Fiodor Dream Dog and discovered that he is female – this fact renders significant portions of this review irrelevant.  For example, the hitting of puberty may not lead to the female Fiodor Dream Dog’s voice becoming significantly deeper, or to her needing to shave, and, I have no issue with females taking time to do their hair, only males) guitar tuning as soon as he came on stage and wished the crowd a good evening, not only because it led to me questioning why the crowd couldn’t be allowed down into the bandroom earlier, if the preparation stage of the concert was still ongoing, but also because the tuning of the guitar seemed rather odd also.  As he began playing the guitar I was quite impressed – his guitar playing technique is quite unique – he is most certainly ‘self taught’, or ‘self styled’.  I think Fiodor Dream Dog’s music could be improved dramatically if he spent less time doing his hair (which is most certainly ‘self styled’) and if he ever hit puberty and hence came into possession of a voice befitting one of the masculine form.  Fiodor Dream Dog is a solo artist, and quite a songwriter, although he’s no Jens Lekman, who seems to be clearly his idol/hero.  If not for Fiodor Dream Dog’s voice I would have thoroughly enjoyed his set.  I would like to see him play again one day after his voice breaks – on that momentous occasion he should place an announcement upon his web page.  If not for the name Fiodor I may have been unsure of the gender of the singer, but if Fiodor is a female, I apologise.  At times his appearance reminded me of that of k.d. lang, which doesn’t assist me a great deal in the determination of gender of the specimen.

Yoyoyo Acapulco are a decent alternative band.  That is exactly what they are.  They are no Spiderbait or Regurgitator, but these are two exceptional bands, who were in their prime during an exceptional era when extremely interesting music attained something of commercial success.  The singer’s voice irritated me mildly during the set of Yoyoyo Acapulco, but at least he has reached the point of life where shaving is regularly required – I don’t take any male seriously who has never once had the need to shave.  I wasn’t fond of the Yoyoyo Acapulco singer’s hairstyle, but at least the music he produces is interesting.

This was the best gig that I have seen at the International for some time.  Both artists had very decent sounds …. the sound of Fiodor Dream Dog was greatly interesting – his delayed onset of puberty is unfortunate for himself personally, and also for his music.

…. I don’t think I’ll be seeing any jazz concerts for a while. Look into this as you will.
